Read MoreIn the contemporary flavor and cooling sensation market, WS-3 (N-Ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide, CAS 39711-79-0) stands as a premier physiological coolant. Originally formulated by the Wilkinson Sword company in the 1970s, WS-3 remains highly valued across the food, beverage, oral care, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries due to its strong cooling sensation without the associated taste, odor, or volatility of menthol.
Traditional coolants, notably L-menthol, trigger the TRPM8 (Transient Receptor Potential Melastin 5/8) ion channel in sensory neurons, producing a cooling signal sent to the brain. However, menthol carries limitations: strong volatility, a distinct minty odor, and potential dermal irritation at higher doses. In contrast, WS-3 targets the same TRPM8 receptors with different kinetics. The carboxamide group on the menthane backbone offers lower volatility, providing a prolonged, stable cooling effect on the palate and skin with minimal aromatic distraction.
As leading B2B suppliers, global compliance is a top priority. WS-3 is FEMA GRAS listed (FEMA No. 3806) and satisfies US FDA regulation 21 CFR § 172.515. The European Commission includes WS-3 in the EU Union list of flavoring substances (FLAVIS No. 16.016). Additionally, strict purity metrics demand GC assays above 99.0% and heavy metal controls below 10 ppm, meeting USP and FCC standards.
The essential oil usually extracted by the steam distillation, cold compression. The raw material used in the production of essential oils, food and cosmetics are the second largest category of our products, such as camellia oil, eucalyptus oil, oregano oil and peppermint oil, etc.
Hairui Natural Plant selects high-quality raw materials with high standards, strictly controls and supervises the whole production and extraction process, and adopts strict inspection standards to guarantee our oils to be the premium raw material oils.

Base oil, also known as medium oil or carrier oil usually extracted by the cold compression. Single essential oils cannot be rubbed directly on the skin, they must be diluted in a carrier oil before they can be widely used on our body's skin. Many carrier oils have medical properties of their own. We can extract a variety of vegetable oils.

Procuring raw chemical coolants like WS-3 demands compliance with global B2B procurement standards. Supply chain managers evaluate manufacturers on five key requirements:
WS-3 synthesis begins with natural or synthetic L-Menthol. Chlorination of L-menthol yields menthyl chloride, which is transformed into a Grignard reagent (menthylmagnesium chloride). Subsequent carbonation with carbon dioxide yields p-menthane-3-carboxylic acid. This intermediate acid reacts with thionyl chloride to produce p-menthane-3-carbonyl chloride, which then reacts with ethylamine to yield N-Ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide (WS-3). The raw product undergoes crystallization steps in ethanol or water-ethanol mixtures to achieve a minimum GC purity of 99.0%.
Essential oil usually extracted from the flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, bark, fruits and other parts of the plants, and extracted by steam distillation, cold compression, fat absorption or solvent extraction. Comes out, with a high concentration of aroma and volatility. It can be used in many fields.
For example, sweet orange oil is a natural orange peel extract, derived from nature, without any residual risk, and has unique advantages of being safe to the ecological environment. Orange oil can promote crop leaf respiration and photosynthesis, and promote crop growth. It has a good control effect on various diseases and insect pests, a wider range of applications, and obvious economic benefits.
For example, castor oil can promote the growth of hair. When washing hair, use a little castor oil and then massage the hair, which is conducive to the absorption of castor oil. In addition, it can also moisturize the hair and make the hair shiny. At the same time, castor oil can also prevent and treat infections of the scalp.
For example, evening primrose oil's main components include: r-linolenic acid, magnesium, zinc, copper, vitamin C, E, B6, B5. Among them, the most abundant is about 70% linoleic acid (LA) and about 7-10% GLA. It can be made into capsules and taken orally to treat cardiovascular diseases, premenstrual syndrome, and menopausal syndrome.
In 1926, Gaitefussey of France proposed the concept of "aromatherapy". The aromatic molecules of essential oils travel through the nasal cavity into the olfactory area of the brain and eventually reach the limbic system. Different essential oils can produce different effects, such as relaxing the mind, producing drowsiness, calming the mind, and boosting the spirit.
Sensory scientists rarely use a single coolant in modern products. Achieving a balanced profile requires combining different cooling agents. The grid below details how WS-3 works alongside other popular coolants:
| Coolant Name | Chemical Name | Primary Cooling Area | Volatility & Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| WS-3 | N-Ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide | Throat & Roof of Mouth | Moderate Volatility (Sustained) |
| WS-23 | N,2,3-Trimethyl-2-isopropylbutanamide | Front of Tongue & Mouth | Low Volatility (High Impact, Short) |
| WS-5 | N-(Ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-3-p-menthanecarboxamide | Intense Roof of Mouth & Throat | Very Low Volatility (Longest Duration) |
| L-Menthol | (1R,2S,5R)-5-Methyl-2-(propan-2-yl)cyclohexan-1-ol | Generalized Oral Cavity | High Volatility (Fast Evaporation) |
Formulation Tip: A ratio of 60% WS-23 and 40% WS-3 is often used in the beverage and vape sectors. This blend delivers an immediate cooling sensation upon inhalation or ingestion, followed by a clean, lingering freshness in the throat, without any residual bitter note.
